Rooney, who had not scored in the opening three Premier League games of the season, netted the club’s first three goals on the night before Ander Herrera added a fourth and Javier Hernandez missed a penalty as Louis van Gaal’s side won the tie 7-1 on aggregate, having emerged as 3-1 victors in the first leg.
United will subsequently go into pot two for the group stage draw of the competition on Thursday.
