Amazon is keen on increasing its footprint in the African market by opening a second office in South Africa, to support its cloud offering known
as Amazon Web Services. Amazon launched Amazon Web Services in 2006 and is currently the largest provider of cloud computing services globally. AWS offers among other services development and test environments, big data analytics to both startups and established companies. It also offers mobile, web and social applications to enterprise applications to business to support public sector and mission critical workloads.
The launch of the second office comes as Amazon is celebrating 10 years in South Africa, with the first office based in CapeTown. Amazon hopes to use the new office as a launching pad for its services within the African continent and is currently recruiting over 250 staff who will operate from Johannesburg. The staff will be tasked with growing Amazon’s customer base in addition to offering support to various organizations such as start-ups who take up AWS cloud services.
The launch of the offices in South Africa underscores the increased interest in the continent by major Tech companies. Facebook recently opened its African offices in South Africa as it seeks to grow its next 1 million customers as well as have more African business advertise on their platform.
