Google is now facing a new problem. Facebook has surpassed it as the new leading source for news according to a report by parsel.ly
The graph clearly shows Facebook’s continued rise as a news giant where it only had 10% of the news traffic referrals in April of 2012 and as of July this year, it has reached close to 40%. Facebook had passed Google in October last year but only briefly. Google peaked on January when it claimed almost 50% of the traffic and peaked in 2015 on January with slightly over 40%. However, its curve has been on a downward trend as of January this year and may reach the low levels Google experienced around October.
According to the report, Facebook and Google are way ahead of other sites when it comes to referrals by publishers. Parse.ly analysed data from 100 top news websites that were ranked using Alexa and Comscore for news sites, aggregated data collected from Google owned sites and for RSS feeds, they used RSS reader services like the popular Feedly. Here is a chart generated by all this data:
Between May and July, you can see that Facebook edged Google out slightly by traffic numbers to the sites with Yahoo a distant third. An interesting piece of information is that Twitter has more traffic in terms of referrals by publishers than a search engine (Bing).
Facebook rise could be attributed to their recent efforts, like Instant Articles where they want publishers to create articles and the recent revamp in Facebook Notes where they want to position it as a serious blogging platform.
Facebook has 1.5 billion users which is catnip for publishers who would want to have a engaging audience of a considerable size and its rise as a serious platform for publishers to post their content will only get higher and higher.
