A hat-trick from Olivier Giroud secured a stunning 3-0 win for Arsenal away to Olympiacos, as the Gunners completed their mission impossible to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 16th straight season.
Arsene Wenger’s men took a little while to find their feet in the contest, but came roaring to life mid-way through the first half; minutes after Mathieu Flamini had smashed the crossbar, Giroud managed to redirect Aaron Ramsey’s cross which snuck past the goalkeeper at the near post.
The French striker appeared to have sustained a serious ankle injury shortly after the restart, but picked himself up to latch onto Joel Campbell’s delightful pass and stroke it into the bottom corner.
The game became more stretched after Arsenal had established the lead they needed to progress, with Olympiacos forced to commit more men forward, but a penalty in the 67th minute was duly converted by Giroud to seal both his hat-trick and Arsenal’s place in the last 16.
