One of the calling cards of the Lumia brand has been the ability to set the standard on imaging. From the mind boggling 38MP Pureview 808 to the 41MP Lumia 1020 and then the 20MP Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520, the imaging gurus on the Lumia team always
ensured that the Lumia device took the the best pictures in class. However it will be over 16 months until the Lumia brand gets a flagship that will push the imaging boundaries. On October 6th, Microsoft announced that the Lumia flagship will come in the form of two devices: The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL. One of the many questions that many Lumia fans are asking is “Will the Lumia 950 Camera experience retake the imaging crown from the iPhone 6S, LG G4 or Samsung Galaxy Note?”

Lumia 950/950XL Imaging Specifications
The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL have identical cameras and both feature the same triple LED flash. Their specifications bring both evolutionary and revolutionary features.

- This will enable the lossless zoom feature that was first shown in the Lumia 1020 and later in the 930.
- The PDAF sensor is incorporated directly into the Imaging sensor enabling allows ultra fast auto focusing (0.1-0.3 seconds).
- The Lumia has continued to work on improving their lens to include 6 lens.
- Though we don’t have any details on the 5the Generation OIS, we can expect to see another leap from the inventors of optical image stabilization. The fact that the Lumia 950 is thinner than the Lumia 830 (which has the 4th generation of OIS) is an indicator of the leap forward.
- Oversampling is the technique that Lumia uses to create the best possible 5MP picture from the original 20MP source image. This debuted on the Lumia 1020 and was refined in the Lumia 930, thus we should see improvements in the Lumia 950.
- Though not as mind blowing large as sensor as that on the Lumia 1020 (1/1.15 inch), the Lumia 950 sensor size is matches the top smartphones currently.
- This sensor supports the highest ISO sensitivity in the market (ISO12800)
- The only device that beats this F-Stop number (the lower, the better) is he lg G4 with f/1.8. In comparison, the Lumia 930 had an f stop of f/2.4
- The Lumia 950 Camera uses the triple by pulsing the LED in alternate cycles to eliminate the dreaded “red-eye” condition when taking flash images.
- Camera features: Backside-illuminated image sensor, PureView, True 16:9 sensor, Fast Focus, High resolution zoom
- Camera minimum focus range: 10 cm
- Front camera: Full HD 5MP wide angle
- Front camera f-number/aperture: f/2.4
- Front camera features: Still image capture, Video call, Video recording
- Front camera video resolution: 1080p (Full HD, 1920 x 1080)
- Main camera video resolution: 4K (3840 x 2160)
- Camera video frame rate: 30 fps
- Video recording features: Video zoom, Optical image stabilization, Continuous auto-focus, Video light, Lumia Rich Recording with four microphones
- Video recording formats: MP4/H.264
The Microsoft focused tech blog, OneTechStop was able to get an interview with one of the Lumia engineers at the recent Windows 10 device launch. The interview revealed the following about the Lumia 950 Camera experience :
Windows 10 Camera App & Photos App & Improved Rich Capture
In Windows Phone 8.1, users had to contend with 2 official camera apps, several official photo management apps (Lumia Storyteller) and a myriad array of apps that added special features. These included Refocus, Cinemagraph, Microsoft Blink, HyperLapse, Moments etc. Many of these features were consolidated in the Denim update that brought the “Rich Capture” feature to Lumia phones. This feature automatically decided which special feature to apply based on the image. For example Rich Capture could detect that HDR was required, or add the dynamic flash (where the use could dictate the amount of flash added to a picture AFTER the picture was shot), or even detect motion and take multiple shots.
The latest version of Rich Capture improves the work flow, reduces the processing time to complete these algorithms and most importantly improves the image quality of low light. Since these Rich Capture is now built into the Photo’s app, users may be able to edit the Rich Capture on your PC (once the file is saved to OneDrive.
This feature of taking simultaneous exposure images helps eliminate the impact of movement in images. The camera can detect the portions that have movement and the portions that don’t, then the Rich Capture algorithm stitches the two images intelligently to produce the best image.
Improved Image Capture Algorithms
The Lumia team has a 3 pronged approach to improving their image algorithms.
- The Lumia 950 camera detects how you are holding the phone, the compensates the algorithm accordingly. For example the phone will know if you are on a tripod or just using your hand.
- The camera will then assess what happens in the scene and adjusts the algorithm again.
- Rich Capture is then applied based on the scene, utilizing the Dual Exposure algorithm explained above.
- Living Images
The Lumia team has added some key features to the Living Images features that was first introduced with the Lumia 830 and 930. The camera captures a small snippet of video before the image is taken, thereby adding context to the image. Previously the living image file was saved separately from the image file. The living images could not be uploaded to OneDrive, which meant auto back up, sharing and viewing the living images on a device other than your phone was impossible. This has been fixed in the latest Windows 10 Photo App. Living images will now be saved as a combined jpg file. This means auto back is easy and sharing both the still and living image across all social platforms can now be done. The Lumia 950 camera can automatically detect whether a living image is required by detecting the motion in the scene. If no motion exists, then only a still image will be recorded. This will help save storage space on users devices.
- Instant Camera Start
The camera app is always running in the background in Windows 10. This means that the camera will start up instantly as soon as the physical shutter button is pressed, enabling you to capture that special moment. The image processing time has also been significantly reduced. Thus the shot-to-shot time is limited to how fast you can press the shutter button (both physical and on-screen). NOTE: The Windows 10 Camera app will allow you to extract 8MP images from 4K video clips.
- Zoom and Oversampling
The 20 MP Lumia 950 camera allows the use to capture incredible detail. The new image algorithms retain sharpness with minimal noise. The picture below show the improved color balance as well as the detail when zoomed in on the subject’s face.
Improved Video Settings
The Lumia 950 Camera can capture 4K video at 24 fps to 30fps. 1080p video can be at captured at up to 60fps. The Windows 10 camera app will allow the user to manually adjust any setting while shooting video. This was relegated to just focusing on the Lumia Camera app in Windows Phone 8.1.
Conclusion
We can expect to see more details about the Lumia 950 Camera Pureview experience over the next weeks as the Lumia team slowly release technical details and sample images.
